Makchim: A Wayang Peranakan

The Play evolves round ‘Makchim’ the stepmother. Set in the current era, Mrs Swee Gek Neo is the stepmother to 2 stepsons. She came into the household a few months after the death of the Mr Swee Peng Guan’s first wife due to childbirth-related illness.

She gave birth to her own son who is the youngest child of the family. She is a well-respected Matriach in the family.

Gek Neo is assisted by her sister, Tachi Pungot, who dotes on her and the children. She is the right-hand of Gek Neo.

Gek Neo seeks the help of her close friend Tachi Tong, to match her stepson Winston to a Nonya (peranakan lady). Having settled the matrimonial matters of her family, she called for a meeting to discuss the future.

Can we judge a book by its cover? If there is a will, there will be a way.
