Synopsis
Written by Singaporean playwright Edgar Liao, this illuminating and superbly crafted supernatural comedy-drama-musical about hell, heaven, demons, angels and a place called home tells a riveting, funny and moving story of an old Singapore woman who, after dying, discovers she cannot cross over into her home in the Underworld because she had died in a nursing home in a foreign land.
With the help of an official from the Ministry of Hell, she’s given one more chance to return to the mortal world for one final mission – to die in the country she calls home.
One of the most polished and exciting new Singapore plays to have emerged in recent years, "Ma Goes Home" was hailed by Theatre Idols' judges as great theatre that grabs and makes audiences think about life with its powerful theme of pragmatism versus emotional decisions.
Inspiration for Writing the Play
"Singapore, February 2009 - 'Pump petrol in JB cannot. Send our grandmothers to JB can.'
"This response by a friend to the Minister of Health's statements, in which he encouraged Singaporeans to utilize nursing homes in Johor Bahru in Malaysia for reasons of affordability, captures the perplexing way in which matters of an emotional nature are approached with unflinching rational instrumentality. This perhaps explains why, forty-five years since, we are still nation-building - we have the best engineers and the best bricks, but we forget to use glue.
"Home is not just where one lives, but also where one hopes to die."
- Singaporean playwright Edgar Liao
