Sticky Rice Tuckshop
Restaurant Review by Pastry Girl February 11, 2008 1542 views
Opened in October 2006, I never really had the opportunity to go there to try out their food. Yesterday on a relaxed mood, I decided to stop over at Sticky Rice Tuckshop located at Raffles City Shopping Center for my afternoon tea after work. I knew they have a restuarant at Kensington Road in Serangoon Gardens and this outlet was more of a cafe style for a quick bite or to chill out.
I am glad I made my way there because I was informed by the waitress that they have a 40% off cakes and pastries from 2-6pm with any hot beverage order.
This cafe is relatively small with a seating capacity of 20 but it presents a cosy atmosphere. The majority of the seating capacity was the opposite area across the deli counter. The dark wood panels with floral motifs exuded a modern Asian touch which complements their menu. They offer a range of Asian bites such salads, curries, sandwiches and desserts at affordable prices ranging from $5.90-$9.90. An all day breakfast set is also available offering pancakes ($8.50), cinnamon french toast ($8.90) and assorted toasts ($2.50-$5.50) with a variety of fillings.
Glancing at the cakes on display, I was recommended by the waitress to try the carrot cake ($5.90) which is their signature cake and it was the last piece left. The assorted flavours of cheesecakes were equally tempting but I decided to take the carrot cake which is my favourite.
They even have their own special range of infused brewed teas in a pot ($5.90) which attracted me more than their ice blended and latte options. I had the lemongrass and pandanus which has a very strong but fragrant taste that leaves a lingering refreshing lemongrass flavour. If you are not a fan of lemongrass, I would advice you not to go for this lest you might experience a slight heatiness.
I was comfortably seated right in front of the deli counter and admiring the pretty cakes on display with the bossa nova songs playing in the background which made my Sunday afternoon tea a pleasant experience. The service staff was very patient and did not show a sign of impatience when I ask her several questions about the menu items. She was also very prompt in refilling my pot with hot water with a smile.
The carrot cake however was average. The interior was quite dry and lack of the moist texture. Perhaps it was the last piece and the frosting was too sweet but the flavour was good. A good mix of shredded carrots, walnuts and raisins were used in their batter.
I also tried their toast with scrambled eggs ($3.50) which was delicious. The scrambled egg was done nicely with crushed pepper instead of those ground pepper, not too buttery and served steaming hot with 2 slices of multi-grain toast. It was also accompanied with kaya and butter in the Asian style.
Overall, I had a good dining experience and would return to try their other selections on the menu which are quite fascinating. Black sticky rice with gula melaka ice cream? Pandan iced tea with aloe vera? Hearing them is enough to make me crave for them.
