A Cosy Little Japanese Restaurant

The simple and cozy atmosphere of Megumi belies the excellent food serve in this small establishment in the east. Megumi is what a Japanese restaurant tucked in a suburb should feel like.

The menu presented is suitably large with a spectrum of offerings. Food ranged from Nigri to Sashimi to Ramen. In addition, there were Japanese rolls offered and Japanese rice bowl. What really impressed me was that they offered Gyu Don. Gyu Don has always been a favorite of mine. It has been difficult, however, to find good Gyu Don offered in Singapore (Yoshinoya does not count).

When my Gyu Don came, I was impressed. The Gyu Don had a raw egg yolk on top of a steaming bowl of Japanese rice and beef. First, it is difficult to find good Gyu Don and this one not only was good, it was also topped off with a raw egg yolk, like it should. The beef was cooked to perfection, tender and tasty. The mixture was simply marvelous.

I also ordered two types of nigri. I ordered Ama Ebi and Ika Nigri. The Ama Ebi was fresh and served exactly how I would imagine good Ama Ebi would be served – a  piece of juicy Ebi, not the two puny prawns on top of nigri at Sakae or any of the Japanese joints in Singapore. I was surprised when the waiter brought along two pieces of fried ebi heads. I have never been served that in Singapore before and I was delighted. Trust me, the fried prawn heads were delicious.

Overall, the dining experience at Megumi was pleasant. The food was value for money. Unfortunately, they were extremely crowded, compromising quality of service. It did not help that I was seated at a corner outside the restaurant.
