I fell in love with Epicurious the first moment I sat down on its wooden chairs. I was early waiting for my friend and the friendly waitress started chatting with me to make me comfortable (in fact, she admonished my friend when he finally arrived late). With its cosy and unpretentious decoration, one can pretend she’s sitting in some European deli or a countryside cottage on an idyllic evening when you’re dining in Epicurious.

Forget stiff starched uniforms and polished shoes at this café. The staff are all dressed in their own unique casuals, berms on some, 3-quarters on others and all manners of casual T-s. However, they are definitely not casual in their service standards. Ask them about the furniture in the place and they will tell you where they scouted each one. I think there’s one table which was a school desk from some old bygone era, one was an old mahjong table (the money drawers are still intact) and another is some old canteen bench from an old school.

With regards to the food, I would venture a guess that the cuisine at Epicurious as fusion (because I’ve no idea how to place it). My favourite dish from Epicurious is its Shepherds Pie. It’s a unique recipe quite unlike any other shepherd pies I’d tried elsewhere (not that many restaurants still serve this homely dish). However, it does not appear on its menu anymore. I used to call in advance to reserve the dish while reserving a table and I'd suggest you do the same if you'd like to try it. Anyways although Epicurious hasn't been very crowded, I highly recommend making reservations as they do not have that many seats. Now, Epicurious serves mainly Italian foods but I called it fusion because I sense some asian influence in their dishes. Back to the shepherd's pie, you'd find some traces of indian spice-like flavours in its meat sauce though I can't place what exactly was in it.

Epicurious does not have a menu per se. Rather, they do "blackboard specials" which they change rather regularly. Do not expect to find the same menu everytime you visit. However, if you have any favourites, you could call in advance to order it. So far however, I had never been disappointed in any of their "new" foods. When they say there's cheese over anything, there would SERIOUSLY be lotsa cheese... and really good cheese to be exact. For the sweet toothed people, desserts are a must. While its dessert menu is small, it still does occupy a large part of its "blackboard". With usually about 4 desserts to choose from, they make a nice ending to your meal along with their very own sangria made with red wine and a variety of fruits including mostly grapes. The sangria's a refreshing light drink if it’s still too early for serious wines. As for prices, not a worry cos Epicurious is very affordable for the quality of their food and service.

Epicurious also sells a variety of cheeses, wines and assorted household stuff like serving plates, utensils etc. These wares also double up as decorations adorning Epicurious’ walls. Epicurious also has a whole bunch of cds which you may browse and tell the staff if you’d like the music changed.

A huge thumbs’ up for Epicurious if you’re looking for a nice comfortable evening!

About Silenius

Wikipedia says, "the Silenoi were followers of Dionysus. They were drunks, and were usually bald and fat with thick lips and squat noses, and had the legs of a human. Later, the plural "silenoi" went out of use and the only references were to one individual named Silenus, the teacher and faithful companion of the wine-god Dionysus. A notorious consumer of wine, he was usually drunk and had to be supported by satyrs or carried by a donkey. Silenus was described as the oldest, wisest and most drunken of the followers of Dionysus, and was said in Orphic hymns to be the young god's tutor.
