Hearing from a friend that a new Swedish cafe has sprouted out in Arab Street, I decided to check it out with her on our day off. Tucked in a convenient location, it has a clean and modern decor that was simple and cosy.

Named Fika, it has a history behind that name. In Sweden, Fika is a social institution where it means having coffee with your family and friends. The lady boss, Tas, apparently married a Sweden man so they decided to name the cafe Fika where diners can go there for a break from their work. According to Tas, Fika is more of a cafe and bistro rather than a restaurant concept.

There was quite a bit of crowd in the cafe so we settled for a table right at the end of the cafe. There were only 2 service staff at the front and it did take quite some time for them to gesture us to our seats.

Settling down, we looked through the menu and it was not entirely Swedish. Having been to Ikea to dine several times, Fika seems to offer a more western fusion with Swedish feel. I decided to go for their Swedish meatballs ($16.90) which was served with home made creamy sauce, potatoes and lingoberry jam. I found the price was little overpriced as the meatballs served was quite a small portion.

My friend had the Swedish Hash ($17.90) which consisted of pasta, minced beef and cheese on the dish that gave an oozing melting cheesy taste. It was just average and could do better with more minced beef.

We were pretty full after the meal and the desserts did not appeal to us so we just had a hot cup of tea before we left.
