Having heard rave reviews about Le Bistrot du Sommelier, I went with high expectations, and am pleased to report that they were indeed met. I went with a party of five and we were seated on the second floor. Though slightly cramped, the ambience was still very warm and pleasant.

At first glance, the menu seems to have a limited selection. I was quite relieved when the waitress lugged over the big chalkboard and showed us the beef specials. We ordered three starters to share.  Pork terrine, tomato salad, and two servings of escargots. The pork terrine was good, but not spectacular for me. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the tomatoes were firm and juicy- I was very pleased with this dish, as it shows how simple food can be yummy with quality ingredients and minimal fuss. Of course no French meal for me is complete without garlicky escargots, which did not disappoint. We also decided to go family style with the five of us sharing three mains- beef onglet, lamb and chicken with 40 garlic cloves, which were all excellent. The meats were tender, and the sauces all rich, savoury and different for each dish. I was particularly impressed by the chicken, which was served hot in a claypot, with meat so tender and it practically fell off the bone, and so full of flavour that it left me wanting more.

The charm of Le Bistrot du Sommelier, despite its mouthful of a name, lies in its country-style, home-y appeal. I found it a refreshing change from the big white plate, small portion type French restaurants which I have (incorrectly) come to expect whenever anyone suggests French cuisine. This is definitely one of the gems of the Singapore culinary scene, and I will definitely be back.
